the eating slowly experiment: fork down method (introduction)

Scarf! That is the sound of me, still eating too quickly.

My first method of slowing down my eating for the eating slowly experiment, didn't work nearly as well as I had hoped. With high expectations, today marks the beginning of the second test method to create a slower eating experience.

Eating Slowly Method #2

Method to be Tested. Put fork down in between bites.

How to do it. Simply put your fork (or other eating utensil) down after each bite of food. This will force a pause between bites and an overall slower eating experience. If you are eating something with your hands like a sandwich, this means simply placing it down after each bite. I realize that this may become a bit tedious, so I am allowing myself a maximum of two bites between each pause, if necessary.

Dates for Implementation. Thursday March 8 to Thursday March 29.

Remember this experiment is designed to be interactive. So, try this method along with me as instructed above. E-mail me (mylessseriouslife@gmail.com) or leave comments on this post to provide me with feedback as you go! At the end of 3 weeks look for a complete method recap post.

Eat, pause, eat, pause, eat, pause...

  1. I need to let you borrow my kids for the third method: Eating and taking care of everyone else. It takes me so long to eat a meal and normally if my food starts out hot, by the time I finish it is cold. Too many interruptions when you are a Mom.

    1. haha! i imagine that gets to be difficult. but, i'll borrow your kids any day because they are awesome! i would have a hard time with this because i love food so much. but, i'm sure things change when you have your own... :)

  2. I need to do this - I tend to wolf down food. After cooking it and patiently taking pics for the blog the suspense is too much. LOL!

    1. right? it is like all this build up to eating and then 'scarf!' its gone. i agree it certainly takes patience for me even to take blog pics! if you try it let me know how it works for you!

  4. This is the technique I have used recently. It works really well if you're strict with yourself about it. As always there are certain types of food that seem harder to put a fork down in between because they're not just neat bites, but if you're strict it works great! Hope you like it!

    1. yeah, i can totally see how this may work better with some food types than others. and i can be strict! i had my first go today at lunch and was successful. but, sometimes hard to remember to put down that damn fork! it is a learning process...i'll let you know in 3 weeks how i did!

  5. I use little kid sized silverware when I eat dinner at home. I always take smaller bites! I also eat slowly for lunch a lot because I eat at my desk while I work or do HW and always put my fork down between bites.

  6. Eeeesh! I love this idea. Sounds super challenging though! I'm a speed eater. I used to give myself stomach aches as a kid because I raced through my meals. At least I'm not THAT bad anymore ;)

  10. It's so true! I need to get slower at eating, I'm always the first one done at the table so I start muching on bread... I eat way too quickly.

I'm not sure I could get used to putting the fork down between each bite, but it seems like a good way to not eat too quickly and actually savor the food I put into my mouth!

    1. yes! i always finish before my boyfriend (granted, he eats more food than i do...but still) and then find myself picking or eating more than i want because i'm bored and just stting there in front of food.

  11. i love this idea!!! This is actually a current goal of mine as well. I find that I am so much more satisfied when I don't blast through a meal in 2 minutes...go figure, haha!

  12. I always do this when I eat salads at school and it takes me FOREVER to eat them! I'm doing it right now.
I think this method may work for you.

  13. Curious to see how this turns out! It seems to require more willpower than the previous methods: a quality that I sometimes lack. Haha.

  14. I do this all the time! I think it works for me :] I usually take the longest to get up from the table. Try to taste and enjoy each bite while your fork is down. My food tastes so much better when I'm not in a hurry!

  15. I love this method...I also do this with my food. Take a bite, put it down, take a bite, put it down. :)

  16. Ugh! I am the fastest eater I know and even when I deliberately try to eat slow and feel like I'm eating at the speed of a sloth, I still manage to out-eat everyone! I will be following your trials closely!
