a serious interjection: on perfection

I have a confession.

I started to take pictures of my food on Monday for this week's WIAW post. The day started innocently enough with giant salads filled with veggies and leftover chicken bbq.

But, Monday was dark and dreary and so was I. One bowl of granola turned into two...

...a postponed run turned into the entire day spent on the couch, things got out of hand with the peanut butter...

...and the wine (this is where the documentation ends).

Lemon olive oil cake was eaten and the only steps I took outside of my house were to photograph food. And it was Monday. MONDAY. Needless to say I didn't use this day's food for my weekly WIAW post.

This morning I took a step back and thought that maybe, just maybe, the blog world would appreciate a bit of harsh reality. I'm a perfectionist. But some days I end up on the couch with my hand covered in bowl of cocoa-dusted popcorn at 2:27 on a Monday afternoon. And, some days I don't have the energy (or desire) to even walk the dog the mailbox. I don't always work out twice a day or eat a well balanced dinner. And, that, my dear blog friends, is ok.

A Serious Interjection: A bit of imperfection is perfectly acceptable. In fact, it's encouraged.

  1. Perfection is overrated anyways. This is life. When you get to the end of it, you're going to remember the silly times and the goofy memories and the people you had with you during it...not the time you ran for an hour straight and followed it up with a plank and a bowl of brussels sprouts.

    1. I love this comment. You are SO right dear Faith. This is a hard lesson to learn sometimes, but we all need to strive (or at least folks like me) for better balance in life. In all things.

    2. And a question for you -- do you always measure out your peanut butter? (saw the tablespoon). I used to do this to make sure I was getting the "right amount," but now just dive straight into the jar.. I probably eat much more of it than I used to ... but what's so wrong with that? :)

    3. Ah! You caught me! No, I measure most things. It is true. I measure cereal, I measure granola, I measure peanut butter. But, for me is isn't always about making sure I eat a small about, but also about making sure I eat enough. With the amount I exercise I have to watch that I intake enough calories and protein. It is a balance between those two worlds (somtimes I struggle here, I must admit). But, for example, 1/2 cup cereal after a 12 mile run does not suffice! I have to make sure I eat huge bowls with enough of calories.

Oh, and PS my nut butter Tablespoons are ALWAYS overflowing. :)

  3. I love this, I think we all forget that there is so much more than the perfect reality many blogs portray.

  5. "The perfect is the enemy of the good." My life is much happier now that I fully accept this and aim for moderation in all things. Thanks for keepin' it real, Sara! :)

  6. How did you know I needed this just today? It captures both the up- and downside of the blog world: On one hand it can make me feel like I had to eat healthier/work out more often/... - at times this can be very motivating, at others frustrating. Yet on the other hands posts like this one make show me I'm not alone in having "these days". Thank you!

  8. This really was a great post, Sara. I definitely notice a tendency to try and portray an image of a perfect life in the blog world, but that's nowhere near close to being realistic. I have crappy days like this as well, and I'm pretty sure everyone does. I get cranky, I get lazy, I get munchy, I get b*tchy... I want to meet one person that doesn't - they're probably not human. It's perfectly okay to have days like this and we shouldn't beat ourselves up for them. Life is full of ups and downs, and as hard as we might try to be positive and motivated all the time, sometimes it just feels like it's beyond our control and we have to wait out the slumps.

    1. Thanks, Amanda. Sometimes it does feel like everyone in blog world is perfect. I want people to know I'm not. And...that is ok. And normal. Thanks for reading. Means more than you know.

  9. This is what I needed to hear - that's it's ok to not feel like working out for a day and that sometimes you're just not satisfied with a meal. Thanks for this :) have a great day xx

  10. Love the report of the crappy day. We all have them - especially now with the rainy and cold weather outside, most of the time I just feel like curling up with the kitty on my bed and read the whole afternoon and evening until it's time to go to sleep. And don't let me start about the lack of motivation to cook up something healthy these days.
